The drum-heavy song, which dropped Oct. 31, opens with frontman Dan Reynolds singing, “All my life been sittin’ at the table/ Watching them kids; they’re living in a fable/ Looks, luck, money never left a’wishin’/ But now it’s about time to raise up and petition.” He repeats a slightly varied version of the verse, this time louder and edgier, accompanied by an anxious electric guitar riff.
The song’s artwork also features a giant metallic head that’s been split in half, serving as a nod to Pink Floyd’s 1994 album Division Bell.
“’Cause I’ve been wondering,” Reynolds continues on the chorus, building momentum, “When you gonna see I’m not for sale/ I’ve been questioning/ When you gonna see I’m not a part of your machine.”
The energy culminates with Reynold’s voice becomes robotized. “I am the machine,” he admits.
